Foyle Sailability for Maritime Festival

Latest News - All Foyle Sailability Events Postponed Due to Coronavirus

Foyle Sailability will be making sure that those of all abilities get their chance to take part in Derry’s Foyle Maritime Festival. The disability sailing and water activities organisation are staging a special 2 day Regatta at Foyle Port Marina on Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th July.

This event is open to people with disabilities from across the North West, says chairperson Cathal MacElhatton. “Our sailing events over these two days will be fully accessible - a hoist is available for those with mobility issues.  We will have Hansa dinghies, a passenger boat, a clipper canoe and a SQUIB available.  This will be the first time we have used the SQUIB which has kindly been donated to us on long term loan from our friends at Belfast Lough Sailability, who helped us start our group 3 years ago.”

The FS Regatta activities will run from 11am-3pm on both days - subject to weather conditions.  Booking is essential and can be done by emailing: foylesailability@gmail.com

This project is part funded by the Loughs Agency through the Sustainable Development Fund.  Spokesperson Andrew Sides says the Loughs Agency "is pleased to have the opportunity to support this Foyle Sailability Regatta. The award winning Sustainable Development Fund was established to enable groups to develop events, such as this, that will draw attention to the potential of the tourism resource that is the River Foyle."

Cathal MacElhatton says Foyle Sailiablity has been delighted at the success of recent events they have organised. “We successfully provided sailing and water-based activity through dinghies, post boat, passenger boat and clipper canoe to 85 participants last month in Greencastle, supported by over 25 volunteers including junior volunteers.  We seem to be growing from strength to strength and would like to thank all our sponsors, as well as the local media and the public for their superb support!”
